The Microbiology and Virology Laboratory of the University of Brescia isolates the Coronavirus

An important success for the Microbiology and Virology Laboratory of the University of Brescia. The team of researchers of prof. Arnaldo Caruso, who is the director of the Laboratory at the Civil Hospital of Brescia and President of the Italian Society of Virology, has isolated the Coronavirus strain (SarsCoV2) which has infected a patient from Brescia. Other viral isolates are rapidly adding to the first.

The researchers who are at the forefront of SarsCoV2 isolation, Francesca Caccuri and Alberto Zani, were able to confirm the strong aggression of the virus against human cells in the test tube.

This milestone achieved represents an important step forward for understanding the mechanisms underlying the pathogenicity of the virus and for the development of antiviral drugs and preventive vaccines. The information obtained from the Microbiology and Virology laboratory of the University of Brescia, together with the isolated samples, will become the heritage of the biobank which, under the auspices of the Italian Society of Virology, will arise at the San Raffaele in Milan.
