The National Science Foundation, under its Directorate for Education & Human Resources core research programme, invites proposals for the building capacity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education research funding opportunity. This supports projects that build individuals’ capacity to carry out STEM education research to broaden the pool of researchers that can conduct research in STEM. The following proposal types are awarded:
•individual investigator development in STEM education research – supports individual investigators in pursuing investigator-designed programmes of developmental activities that will build capacity to pursue fundamental research projects while advancing their STEM education research skills and competencies more generally;
•institutes in research methods – supports field-initiated institutes that provide participants with training in up-to-date applications of computational, quantitative, qualitative and evaluative research methods that advance the participants’ skills and competencies in STEM education research;
•conference and workshop – support to conduct conferences and workshops related to the programme goals.
Foreign organisations may apply in consortium with US organisations. Early and mid-career faculty new to STEM education research, particularly underrepresented minority faculty and faculty at minority-serving and two-year institutions, are encouraged to submit proposals.
The total budget is USD 12 million to fund 26 awards. Up to 16 awards are available for individual investigator development in STEM education research proposals, worth up to USD 350,000 each for three years. Up to five awards are available for institutes in research methods proposals, worth up to USD 1m each for three years. Conference and workshop proposals are worth between USD 25,000 to USD 100,000 each.
