The Council of the European Union has adopted the regulation establishing the Euratom program for the period 2021-2025 with a budget of 1.3 billion for fusion and fission research. It will strengthen European nuclear competences and will support the European plan against cancer (eg Ionizing radiation used for diagnostics and therapy). There is also a lot of potential in applying nuclear science to areas such as agriculture, the environment and space. The JRC will continue to play a central role in nuclear training, knowledge management and will open access to its nuclear research facilities to EU scientists. Finally, the program will place emphasis on Europe’s nuclear expertise and expertise through mobility, education and training (MSCA), as well as technology dissemination and transfer.
