Research and innovation: Italy 5th in Europe for EU Horizon 2020 funding

In the last 5 years (2014-2019) Italy has been awarded 3.15 billion euros for research and innovation projects financed with the EU Horizon 2020 program, ranking 5th among European countries. This is highlighted by an analysis made by ART-ER, the new company of Emilia-Romagna for growth and innovation, based on data from the EU Open Data portal, which shows that almost 65% of the loans arrived in Italy (over 2 billion) went to 4 regions: Lazio (25%) Lombardy (20.6%), Piemonte (10%) and Emilia-Romagna (8.9%).

Our country has received just over 8% of the 38.8 billion euros disbursed in Europe and is 4th for number of participations in research and innovation projects (8,960), preceded by Spain (9,784), Great Britain (11,484 ) and Germany (11.949). Funding was taken up mainly by Germany (6.3 billion euros), Great Britain (5.4 billion), France (4.1 billion) and Spain (3.4 billion).

The regional ranking. In the last 5 years the region that received the most funding under the Horizon 2020 program was Lazio, which collected about 25% of contributions arrived in Italy (789 million euro), followed by Lombardy (651 million), Piedmont (319 million), Emilia-Romagna (281 million) and Tuscany (234 million). In the last positions of the ranking drawn up by ART-ER there are Basilicata (6 million), Molise (1.2 million) and Valle d’Aosta (664 thousand euros).

Rome, Milan and Turin the first three Italian provinces. At the provincial level, Rome (776 million euros of contributions received) exceeds Milan (478.8 million euros) and Turin (266 million euros) while Genoa (160 million euros) precedes Bologna by a whisker (158 million euros). In the last positions of the ranking there are the provinces Ragusa (290 thousand euros), Barletta-Andria-Trani (280 thousand), Siracusa (270 thousand) and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola (50 thousand).
