The Commission starts work on the main research and innovation missions for cancer, climate, oceans, smart cities and soil

The Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas officially started work on five major European research and innovation missions that will be part of Horizon Europe, the EU’s next research and innovation program.

On the occasion of the Informal Council for Research Ministers of Helsinki, Commissioner Moedas announced the appointment of five leading experts to head the mission bards – Connie Hedegaard, Harald zur Hausen, Pascal Lamy, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, Cees Veerman – who will propose goals and deadlines to define specific missions.

Professor Mariana Mazzucato, Special Advisor for Mission Driven Science and Innovation for Commissioner Moedas, presented a new report: “Governing Missions in the European Union“, which illustrates the 3 main elements to make missions a success:

  1. how to involve citizens in missions;
  2. how to ensure that public organizations are optimally equipped to carry out missions;
  3. how to optimize funding for missions.
